Who We Are

Our rescue is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of cats in need. We work tirelessly to provide shelter, medical care, and loving homes for abandoned, neglected, and at-risk cats in our community. We receive no funding from the state or federal government, and operate entirely through the generosity of donors and the dedication of our volunteers. As a 100% volunteer-driven organization, every dollar donated goes directly toward the care, rehabilitation, and placement of the cats we serve. Together with our community, we are committed to giving every cat a second chance at a safe, healthy, and loving home.

Our History

T.A.I.L.S. was incorporated as a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to help the Township of Grosse Ile establish a local animal shelter. Before that, Grosse Ile shared shelter services with Trenton. In 1997, when the Township purchased Centennial Farm, a 32-acre property intended for recreation, T.A.I.L.S. partnered with the Township to renovate a small horse barn into what became the Grosse Ile Animal Shelter. Through dedicated fundraising efforts, T.A.I.L.S. helped cover renovation costs, and the shelter proudly opened its doors in December 1997.

From 1997 to 2018, the Grosse Ile Animal Shelter housed more than 4,000 pets. During that time, T.A.I.L.S. contributed nearly $250,000 toward medical expenses, including spay/neuter surgeries, wellness care, and treatment for illness or injury. In 2018, the organization expanded its mission to assist homeless and needy pets beyond those residing specifically at the Grosse Ile shelter.

In 2019, T.A.I.L.S. separated from Grosse Ile Township and opened its own facility on Macomb Street. Although initially unable to house pets due to zoning restrictions, the organization continued its Kitten Foster Care Program and successfully placed 42 kittens in loving homes. In 2020, T.A.I.L.S. received zoning approval to house felines and earned Animal Shelter Certification from the State of Michigan. That year alone, 117 cats and kittens were adopted through the program.

Today, T.A.I.L.S. continues its commitment to helping cats and kittens in need. In December 2025, the organization moved into a larger, more modern facility in the same neighborhood, allowing it to provide even more space, comfort, and care for the animals it serves.
